The people of Ukraine have ousted an authoritarian and murderous Government. We are in a moment of historic significance that may result in a country favoured by both Russia and the EU, instead of it being torn apart by either side, it being a bridge between two of the greatest cultures this world may ever see.

Russia and the West need to come together and solve the crisis between their cultures once and forever. Being heavy handed with Ukraine is in neither neighbours interests.

The opportunity for progress is extraordinary. The British Foreign Secretary warns Russia not to get heavy handed with Ukraine. Give peace a chance, Mr Foreign Secretary. Love thy neighbour, Mr Putin.

Trolling and Depression

Trolling is like any addiction, done to the death. The central myth that was choice does not exist but the dedicated pursuit of the exclusive feelings or something like that, some warped imperative justifies the disconnection of the self from reliance on others probably has no friends because Daddy is that rich. Full military industrial complex conspiracy theory raw wealth, you better beiieve it, or the corridor guards helmets will issue orders to kill and then capture any one who doubts it. That exclusivity wraps around the fantasy of computer game madness and by the time they are 20, trust fund confidence and hunting instincts combine. He makes yet another gritty advertisement on his video camera. He tried everything but the feeling of desperate disconnection can be felt by his sister but when she speaks with him he is unable to listen agitated, waiting for the man at the age of eleven. Of course the myth of wealth sadly is the one thing not required in this illustration. The stupid malicious desperate could also be a flashy idiot who simply can not keep his idiot trap shut who tramples on a nerve. I can not define the activity of trolling, but I can say it is an addictive behaviour.

Mix it with a victim suffering depression, and it loses its dumb magic and becomes a vicious and sinister addictive activity. Addicts go the full range of behaviours from using dangerous substances like hard drugs right through to mass murderers, it is that kind of category. Being part of it had in the harsh light of day no glamour but scored highly into the soul with the gleam of derision. Bullet grey logic dictated her life, she had to know what people were saying about her, it was what this social media was about. It was her job.

Sad stories in real life. More likely to be connected via the medium. It feels like we, the vast audience, can do something about this. Leave comments that make sense, never attack anyone. Make trolling the awkward but irrelevant stray voice and reduce it to spam. We can do this with software, we can do this with love and humanity. Let us use this medium to lift one another above our shoulders emotionally.

We have a new form of communication in social media. And if it all gets too unpleasant, you can simply suspend or remove your account, start again. Reinvent.

What David Bowie did?

The Next Day – is it a warning about the UK?

The Next Day - is it a warning about the UK?

David Bowie was one of the first artists to harness the power of the internet from about 1997 the now mature engagement with his fans makes the reactions to his invitation for Scotland to “stay with us” far more entertaining than troublesome. I am sure he got what he wanted, he has engaged the entire UK in a political discussion that David Cameron had just refused to do, to debate it with Alex Salmond.
David Bowie - not always nice David Bowie is an artist whose visions of the future he projects include dystopian madness gone wrong, unsanitised horror, and intellectual leaps into the dark that invented new genrés. Now the fairy story logic that our Prime Minister thinks passes for sensibility is seen in a different light.

Alex Salmond correctly challenges the Prime Minister to a debate, a proven process that started along with the idea of “civilisation” during the genesis of democracy 2500 years ago in sunny Greece. David Cameron refused, “oh its up to the Scottish people” he chimes like a swollen doorbell, glowing with self regard.

Wait a minute, he represents the Scottish people as their Prime Minister right now, what is he really saying? He is asking the Scots to vote “Yes” as he prefers the idea of all the Tory tax dodgers inheriting a old England and move all the socialists to Scotland?

What David Bowie did in four short words is start a national debate because our Prime Minister will not lead.

The Polar Vortex and British Rain

Here is a computer generated image of the North Pole’s temperature, showing the Polar Vortex – a huge area of Russia and another huge area over America that has frozen over due to air pressure and winds over the north pole are probably a symptom of climate change.

The effect of all this cold air over the USA has caused a change in the weather patterns over the UK including high average temperatures and the most rain since records began.

The War on Drugs

Of course legalising does not “fix the drug problem” in the same way that making laws does not fix traffic jams. But leaving the laws as they are, continuing this unproductive, ineffective and certainly destructive “war on drugs” lacks political intelligence.

The point is that people are dying because of the laws. Addiction is a disease that doctors can not treat as their patients do not go to their doctors when they feel ill, they are far more likely to go to their drug dealer to “fix” it.

Making heroin illegal causes the addiction to become a disease of magnitude and a locus for crime as well as ultimately funding the Taliban. If the police could arrest all the addicts would society be any better? No. That is the worst thing to do. a society that locks up its weak and its artists is not a society worth living in. Let them live and explore their complex worlds without making life so unrewarding and banal that the only inspiration comes from the desperate need and the onrush of illusory satisfaction from drug use.

The War on Drugs may be the worst solution to the problem. The political will to change this can only come about by education.
